SJ has been using Crystal Alarm since 2012
SJ has used Crystal Alarm for all on-board staff since 2012. If someone triggers an alarm, it is sent both to the traffic control centre in Stockholm or Gothenburg depending on where the train is located, as well as to colleagues on board that specific train.
Features in use
Raise an alarm with your mobile - Android
Crystal Alarm is used on staff mobile phones. By pressing the ON/OFF button multiple times, an immediate alarm is triggered.
Timed alarm for lone working
Used by onboard staff when they need to leave the train to carry out tasks such as shunting. When the timed alarm is active, staff can be monitored from the traffic control centre. If the timed alarm is not cancelled before it expires, colleagues and traffic control are automatically alerted.
External remote control - Crystal Button
All staff have access to the Crystal Button — a compact, discreet remote control that uses Bluetooth technology to trigger the alarm on their phone. Crystal Button has been designed to prevent false alarms.
Custom integration - toilet alarm
The accessibility alarms in the toilets on the X2000 are connected directly to Crystal Alarm. Alerts are sent to all onboard staff. If the onboard team does not respond to the alarm, it is escalated to traffic control.
Alarm centre software for traffic control
All staff have access to the Crystal Button — a compact, discreet remote control that uses Bluetooth technology to trigger the alarm on their phone. Crystal Button has been designed to prevent false alarms.
Everyone on the same train is linked - alert a colleague
All alarms are also sent directly to every colleague on the same train, meaning the person in distress can often receive assistance more quickly. The linking is carried out via an integration with SJ's planning system.
Location tracking via the phone's GPS
In addition to traffic control staff and colleagues being able to see which train the person raising the alarm is on, a GPS position is also transmitted and can be displayed on a map.
Live audio monitoring - assess the situation instantly
When an alarm is raised, the phone's microphone is activated automatically, allowing traffic control to listen to ambient sound in real time. This feature is invaluable for assessing what level of response is required.

"Live Incident A train was travelling from Malmö to Stockholm and, as it approached Hässleholm, a disturbance broke out on board when two passengers without tickets were being removed. One of the SJ staff members felt so threatened that she activated her Crystal Button.
