Better indoor positioning with iBeacons

As is well known, GPS works flawlessly outdoors — but many of our users need to see the location of a person in distress inside a building. With the help of iBeacons, you can pinpoint exactly where a person who has raised an alarm is located, right down to the specific room and floor.

The market for Beacons is red hot right now, and the range of applications is vast. iBeacon is a standard format developed by Apple that broadcasts signals to mobile apps (both iOS and Android). This allows tailored information to be sent to mobile users and triggers certain pre-programmed actions depending on where the user is located. The only limit to how Beacons can be put to use is your imagination.

At Crystal Alarm, we have used the technology to precisely locate a user inside a building. iBeacons are placed at selected points throughout a building and continuously transmit position data to staff members' mobile phones. The position of the nearest iBeacon is included when alarms are received by our systems and the alarm centre.
