Safer staff leads to safer care for patients

When healthcare staff feel secure in their roles, patients receive better and safer care. This is the finding of a study conducted with 2,300 doctors, nurses, and nursing assistants as part of the research project Safety Culture in Health and Social Care – Enablers and Barriers, carried out at the University of Gothenburg.

When staff feel supported, have a manageable workload, and can rely on clear procedures, the quality of patient care improves. Conversely, the study shows that high job demands and practices that depend entirely on individual judgement — expecting staff to act independently from one situation to the next — lead to stress, poor mental health, and reduced effectiveness.
